At one point or another, young kids from all over will have to face the same trial: the first day of school! The first time trying anything is always scary, but there’s just something about school that sends a shiver up every young spine. There are so many factors that contribute to this fear, but one of them is definitely making friends.
Oftentimes, many of the children attending school already have a head start making friends, which makes it that much harder for new kids to fit in. Friends are essential in everyday life and are frequently the make-or-break factor in your day. So, what are new kids supposed to do when everyone else already has a friend? Why not join a robotics club?
Wonky: A Robotics Club Story
It’s little Howie the turtle’s first day of school, and he can’t wait to join the robotics club and make friends. He knows so many interesting facts about different types of robots, and he is very confident that his robot designs will be great. Now all he needs is a friend to help him build it.
One by one, each kid in the club picks their friend to work with until Howie is left all alone. Just as he is resigning himself to design his first robot alone, a new kid comes bursting into the room. He is a tall, fluffy, wonky-looking ostrich! The ostrich, Lincoln, had moved recently from East Africa and is still learning English.
Lincoln joins Howie’s team, and the two of them begin working on their robot design. Howie’s first design is a traditional robot like all the humanoid robots that came before it. Lincoln calls it too boring and challenges Howie to think outside the box. The two of them go back and forth, making designs for all sorts of toy robots. They can’t settle on one, though; every design was just too wonky.
After a while, the boys decide to step back and instead determine what they want their robot to do. Will it complete tasks, wave a robotic arm at people, or make facial expressions? No, they have a better idea. But will these two manage to pull it off? Can two kids this wonky ever be friends? You’ll just have to find out for yourself by reading Wonky: A Robotics Club Story.
