With the big Gingerbread Fair coming up, kids of all ages must band together to engineer the best gingerbread house ever. Piece of cake, right? Nope! The kids quickly discover that construction is a lot harder than it looks.

They have to search through many gingerbread recipes to find the perfect one, mix their ingredients together, and watch out for burning cookies. Their icing can’t be too runny or too thick, the actual gingerbread cookie itself has to be measured just right, and don’t even get me started on all the small candies for decoration that the kids aren't supposed to eat. Plus, the children soon discover that it takes a lot of fine motor skills to stick everything together and keep it all from falling apart.

When they are just about finished, they remembered they needed a door for their little gingerbread boy and gingerbread girl. Will it all fall apart when they add the door? Can the kids present a winning house in the fair? How much fun can building a gingerbread house really be? Find out for yourself by reading The Plan for the Gingerbread House.

Educational Activities

The book detailed above supplies a great way to teach children about planning. The link below links to free printable lesson plan sets that teach kids about writing, math, and engineering. Kids will have a ton of fun learning how to write poems, essays, and do math problems with a fun gingerbread theme. Kids will learn how to pick out their favorite themes in stories and spot rhyming words in an engaging way.

Then, once all the writing and math are done, they can finally attempt what is sure to be one of their favorite gingerbread activities. It’s time to build a gingerbread house! Make learning fun by turning cookie construction into a fun gingerbread man engineering lesson. Summer is now a festive season of learning and super fun holiday activities. Don’t miss out on this awesome learning opportunity for Christmas in July!
